PayanganIf the thrills and spills of the man made water parks in Bali aren't enough to quench your thirst for an aqua adrenaline fix then its time to head inland and up into the hills and jungle canyons of Kerta Village, Payangan (just north of Ubud) for a very unusual adventure - river tubing.

Bali Canyon Tubing Adventure (Jl. Wirasatya, Denpasar, T: 0361 808 0305/808 0307) are the people behind the tubing trips to Payangan and it was with a mix of trepidation and excitement that I jumped into the off road buggy in Kerta Village for the thrill-packed ride to the start of the tubing run.

After a short descent into the Canyon by foot, we were led to the wooden footpaths built along the river as a stopping point during the forty kilometres tubing route. Taking in the amazing panoramic views of the canyon walls we were welcomed by our three professional guides. Armed with our inflatable vehicles, life vests and helmets we took to the water for a rundown on the rules of safe tubing.

Panicking seemed to be the first reaction when I got into my tube but after a few minutes floating on a steady stream I found myself really enjoying the sensation. As the rapids took grip the steady, relaxing pace of stream life suddenly seemed a very distant memory.

We rushed past waterfalls and chirruping packs of local monkeys, hanging on for dear life to the tube handles and soaking up the gorgeous natural surrounds of the Payangan gorge.

As the sun shifted slightly to the west we finally arrived at the end point of our ride, a few metres upstream of the Siap river.

Hiking back up to our start off point we were greeted with a buffet lunch prepared by the pleasant host.

There's something indescribably peaceful about eating hot chicken curry and noodles surrounded by the towering trees and distant blue skies that makes an otherwise very simple meal very extraordinary, much like our very unique tubing navigation of the Siap river – proof you don't always need to head to the beaches of Bali to indulge in a watery good time
