In a developing country like Indonesia, one might think a booming tourist trade on one of its prettiest islands could only be good. There are certainly some benefits. But mass tourism on Bali also creates some serious problems. One problem is economic. Mass tourism on Bali has largely been planned and implemented by the Indonesian government far away in Jakarta, or by foreigners. Few Balinese have been involved in the planning and management of most tourism products on the island. Instead, the Balinese have become the tourist attraction!

the rough narrow racetrack through the rice fields was lined with thousands of people; illegal betting was rife, dozens of makeshift food stalls were selling fanta and nasi jingo, and i had just narrowly escaped being trampled to death by a pair of magnificently decorated bull buffalos.
life moves at a very different pace an hour and twenty minutes west of seminyak…

Holiday adventures should be fun, which “Bali Safari and Marine Park” provides in full measure, as well as it’s more profound and enduring mission of conservation.
Taman Safari Indonesia is an institution oriented to building tourist attractions that are attractive to visitors, environmentally friendly and that help spread the conservation message. They are the Government appointed Indonesian Centre for the Reproduction of Endangered Wildlife and operate the Sumatran Tiger Rescue Team that relocates them when they come into conflict with humans.

In Bali History, creating art was not seen as a real profession. Art was mainly created for temple decorations and religious festivals to honour the Hindu Gods. And actually, producing arts nowadays is still necessary to serve these Gods, but because of the growing tourism, works of art created in Bali are receiving more and more appreciation.

a once in a lifetime experience that transformed Ubud into the biggest ceremonial procession ever witnessed in Bali On the 15th of July, the royal house of Ubud held the climax of its biggest cremation ever. It was by all accounts an exceptional event, which made the nightly news throughout the world. At last Bali was advertised – as it used to be, for its culture, instead of its bomb makers.

Wave of Dreams
Written by Tim Hain-hellobalimagazine.com

For many surfers who grew up in the 80's and even into the 90's, the mention of Uluwatu conjures up a surreal backlit image of an endlessly peeling lefthander breaking over a shallow coral reef, most likely a memory from Albert Falzon's classic 1971 surf movie titled Morning of the Earth. The thought of paddling out from a rocky cave, across a shallow living coral reef and out into the warm Indian Ocean to drop into what looked to be the most perfect waves ever made by God himself, iured many from the comfort of their homes to travel hours and even days to live this dream.

If the thrills and spills of the man made water parks in Bali aren't enough to quench your thirst for an aqua adrenaline fix then its time to head inland and up into the hills and jungle canyons of Kerta Village, Payangan (just north of Ubud) for a very unusual adventure - river tubing.

‘Extremely fast currents sweep you along the coral walls with the ocean literally seething off into the darkness of the trench'
Manta Point Nusa PenidaBali may have its fair share of dive locations worth exploring (think the USS Liberty shipwreck in Tulamben, Bunutan Bay in the east and Menjangan to the west) but the real diving starts when you hit the three islands of Nusa Lembongan, Cenigan and Nusa Penida. Strong currents prevail in the crossing of the geographical division known as the Wallace Line, the Lombok strait being one of the deepest trenches in the world means that any dive conducted here should be by confident individuals, with professional, experienced divers and with the best equipment available.

A fire burns behind a see-through screen as the melodic music of gamelan is played. The light dims but the small fire continues to burn, a loud clanking of wood signals the start of the show. Something flutters against the screen – a blurred image moving in time to the music. The image suddenly becomes clear as all the other puppets appear. This is Wayang Kulit. 'Wayang' means shadow and 'Kulit' means leather. There are 140 characters in 'Mahabarata,' which is one of the Hindu epics and is the most popular story portrayed with Wayang Kulit. There are four types of Wayang shows: 1.Wayang Calonarang, which tells the story about the witch and the queen of witches.

Day trips can be such a rushed affair in Bali; you need to take a little time to explore the lesser-visited parts of the island if you really want to search out the true culture and experience the traditional aspects of Balinese life. This month we take to the hills of Amed and Manggis to ascend Mount Agung, dive the realms of Bunutan Bay, Amed and get back to the roots of local cuisine on the verdant slopes of East Bali with Alila Manggis and their new organic cooking school.
